JNCC Visits Reas Wood SAC and Receives Update on Lough Neagh
Site Visit Highlights the Importance of Protecting Northern Ireland’s Natural Heritage
Lough Neagh Partnership was pleased to welcome members of the Joint Nature Conservation Council (JNCC) during their recent visit to Northern Ireland.
As the UK Government’s principal adviser on nature conservation, the JNCC plays a vital role in providing independent scientific advice on environmental issues across the UK.
Following the Council’s meeting in Belfast on 23 June, members took part in two site visits to explore some of Northern Ireland’s most important habitats. The itinerary included Slievenacloy Nature Reserve and Reas Wood Special Area of Conservation (SAC), offering first-hand insight into the opportunities and challenges facing these protected landscapes.
During the visit, Council members also received an update on Lough Neagh from Richard Gray (Northern Ireland Environment Agency) and Gerry Darby, highlighting some of the key environmental issues currently affecting the lough and the ongoing work to support its recovery and long-term resilience.
The site visit to Slievenacloy Nature Reserve was led by Mike Meharg, who provided an informative overview of the reserve’s unique habitats and conservation importance. At Reas Wood SAC, Peter Harper guided the group through one of Northern Ireland’s finest ancient woodlands, explaining the ecological significance of the site and the management challenges involved in protecting this internationally designated habitat.
Visits such as these provide an invaluable opportunity for decision-makers to see environmental issues on the ground, hear directly from those involved in conservation management, and gain a greater understanding of the collaborative work being undertaken to protect Northern Ireland’s natural heritage.
